Flights to Destin, Florida? They can be a bit confusing...
Please let me confuse you...
If you have been confused about flights to Destin, Florida, don’t feel alone. To illustrate this, the most convenient airport to Destin is the Northwest Florida Regional Airport, formerly known as Okaloosa Regional Airport, and previously Okaloosa Airport... The local airline industry refers to it as “Ft. Walton Beach Airport” - which will be printed on your tickets and which you will see on the monitors at the airport.
Just to un-clarify the picture further, please note that the airport is not located in Ft. Walton Beach and nobody in the Destin, nor Ft. Walton Beach area would know it by that name. And by the way, there is also a public airport in Destin called the “Destin-Ft. Walton Beach Airport” (not related, of course). And by the way, that ancient, ingenious Airport Code System used by the airline industry and online reservation websites for the Destin area is VPS - which is an abbreviation for Valparaiso, FL, the tiny town close to the airport. And by the way, the airport also borrows its runway from Eglin Air Force Base.
And if you weren’t confused enough, the area has just added a brand new Northwest International Beaches Airport (ECP) in Panama City serving the eastern portion of the Destin area as well. If you weren’t confused, I am sure you are now.
Now, Let Me Un-Confuse You...
There are three potential airport options into the Destin area:
1) Northwest Florida Regional Airport (VPS) – Most convenient option for those staying in Ft. Walton Beach, Okaloosa Island, Destin, Miramar Beach, Sandestin Resorts
2) Northwest Florida International Beaches Airport (ECP) – Most convenient for those staying on the eastern side of highway 30-A; the South Walton beaches such as Seaside, Seacrest, Seagrove, Rosemary Beach as well as the greater Panama City area.
3) Pensacola Gulf Coast Regional Airport (PNS) - The least convenient to our area but you may find some connections there that are worth considering and would be convenient for areas to the west of Destin such as Navarre and Gulf Breeze, Florida.
